Reva to rope in franchises for production abroad ( EVHUB.BIZ News updates )

Electric car manufacturer Reva is planning manufacturing facilities abroad under a franchise model to penetrate those markets. These units will be built under licensing agreements with local partners, wherein the brand name and technology will be owned by Reva.

The company, whose head office is here, has sold about 3,400 electric cars so far. It says the licencing agreements will cover not just four-wheelers, but also auto-rickshaws, mini-buses and two-wheelers.
“We are looking at licence manufacturing opportunities to set up plants in different parts of the world. We are evaluating with several countries and several companies, but it is a little premature. But I would definitely say that in the next six months, we would be able to make our first announcement in that area,” Chetan Maini, Chief Technology Officer and Deputy Chairman of Reva Electric Car Company (RECC) told Business Standard.
He said the plan to open overseas manufacturing facilities was conceptualised long before, but the company was seeing much revival of interest over this concept in recent days, as many companies and local governments are showing interest at this model. The company is primarily looking at the US, European and Asian countries.
Reva will also have an investment partner in those plants, other than owning the brand name and technology. The local partners will have the sales rights, because of their understanding of the local markets.
About half the 600-800 electric cars produced by RECC each year are being exported to countries like the UK, Norway, Spain, France, Germany and Costa Rica. The company has sold about 1,000 electric vehicles in London alone, a key market for the company globally, as many as it has sold in Bangalore.
It is also erecting a new manufacturing plant close to its existing one in this city, with an investment of Rs 30 crore. Expected to be operational by early next year, the plant is capable of producing 30,000 electric vehicles yearly.

An inside track on electric cars ( EV news update @ EVHUB.BIZ )

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
imageThe Tesla electric Roadster (Image: Tesla Motors)
How American automakers are staying competitive with electric vehicles, and what car companies in other countries are bringing to the market.
Ford Motor Company's head of electrification, Nancy Gioia, says the electric Focus is coming in 2011 -- no word yet on the price tag. GM's main electric offering, the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, rolls out late next year.

Environment writer Jim Motavalli calls the field embryonic now, but close to explosive growth. He's the author of the book "Forward Drive," and writes about electric cars for the "New York Times."

"I think Ford is actually at the forefront of the three, big American automakers," said Motavalli. "I think they actually have a good overall strategy. General Motors could be said to be putting all of its efforts into the Volt, and I think time will tell whether that's a good strategy or not. Because of its economic woes, Chrysler has announced that it's going to be building electric-drive vehicles, but I think they've been able to spend very little on developing those."

While Ford may be at the forefront,  Motavalli says the company is still "very conservative" in the space. "They don't think there's a lot of early adopters out there."

Internationally, he thinks Japan's Nissan has the "smartest overall strategy for vehicle electrification."

"And what's smart about their approach is they've also got into the charging business. The Renoit-Nissan alliance has built strategic alliances around the world to set up charging stations."

Hydrogen Fuel Is Not Dead ( EV News updates @ EVHUB.BIZ )

Hydrogen Fuel Is Not Dead

John Lounsbury

With the furor over the potential for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric cars recently, one might think the hydrogen car was dead. Nothing could be further from the truth. Feasibility at an affordable price appears to be established and market availability ofhydrogen powered cars may come sooner than you think.

Many issues remain to be addressed and this article will try to cover them. The problems to be overcome are not insurmountable, but are also not trivial. These problems include the economics of hydrogen production, transportation, distribution and storage systems, as well as safety issues for cars involved in collisions.

Alan Ohnsman, writing for Bloomberg, reports that GM (MTLQQ), Toyota (TM), Daimler AG (DAI) and other car makers want to start supplying car fueled by hydrogen as soon as six years from now. Quoting from the article:

"The advances that have been made by the automobile manufacturers are remarkable,” said Scott Samuelsen, director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine. “Infrastructure is the Achilles’ heel.”

The fuel cell center opened in 1998 and is funded mainly by the U.S. government and California Energy Commission. It has also received grants from Toyota and Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s hydrogen unit, said Kathy Haq, a spokeswoman for the center.”

Electric cars to be big draw ( EV News update @ EVHUB.BIZ )

TOKYO - MOVE over hybrids - the biggest buzz at this year's Tokyo Motor Show looks set to come from electric cars as the dream of affordable zero-emission vehicles moves closer to reality.
Japanese automakers, pioneers in hybrid cars powered by a mixture of petrol and electricity, are now looking to take fuel-efficient motoring to the next level with vehicles that run on rechargeable batteries.
Nissan will put its electric car, the Leaf, on display to the public for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show, which kicks off on Wednesday with press previews and opens to general visitors on Saturday.
The mid-sized hatchback, which will go on sale in late 2010 in Japan, is billed by Nissan as 'the world's first affordable, zero-emission car.' It can travel more than 160 kilometres on a single charge, at a top speed of 140 kilometres per hour.

HK steps up efforts to launch electric vehicles by end of 2010 ( channelnewsasia.com ) EVHUB.BIZ news update

SINGAPORE: Hong Kong announced on Wednesday that it is stepping up efforts to give eco-friendly cars the green light.

Some 200 electric vehicles are expected to hit the streets of Hong Kong in the next financial year. The government is said to be in talks with two power companies to launch an electric vehicle leasing scheme by the end of 2010.

LG Chemical, South Korea's largest chemical firm by sales, has also announced that it is investing US$303 million in an electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan.

However, experts in Singapore said that more education and incentives are needed for consumers to take the driver's seat in going green.

While educational institutions, such as the National University of Singapore, continue to develop green technology, more manufacturers are expected to stick a green label on future vehicles.

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery is expected to develop electric and renewable fuel models under the Hummer brand, following General Motors' sale of its Hummer truck brand to the Chinese machine maker.

But experts said growth and demand for such products is dependent on cost.

"The pricing barrier is the one that caps the growth. But once that is capped, the cost of running the electric vehicles is 5 to 6 times less then the gasoline car and the growth will be exponential," said Lim Kian Wee, founder and executive director, AMPLE WORLD.

Driving an electric vehicle in Singapore for example could cost somewhere around S$6 to power up, in comparison to the equivalent of S$80 or S$90 in gasoline.

Ford charges electric, hybrid strategy ( news.cnet.com ) EVHUB.BIZ EV News update

BOSTON--Ford Motor expects to manufacture as many as 2 million all-electric and gas-electric vehicles in the next 10 years, betting that rising oil prices and consumer interest will sustain a long-term transition to new technologies.
The company has set a goal of making 10 percent to 25 percent of its fleet "electrified" by 2020, which represents somewhere between 800,000 and 2 million cars, said Nancy Gioia at a media event here on Wednesday. Ford announced on Wednesday that Gioia will hold a newly created position of director of global electrification, which covers hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery-electric vehicles.
Plug-in electric vehicles promise to offer a much lower cost-per-mile than gasoline cars and deliver substantial environmental benefits. But in the near term, hybrids will likely represent the largest volume in the mix of technologies, said Gioia at the event.
"We've finally demonstrated the technology, the life, the durability, the safety (of hybrids)--all of that has reached a comfort zone to make it viable. Now it's going to be affordability that will drive mass market adoption," she said.

The Financial Potential of the New Electric Vehicle Market ( EVHUB.BIZ EV News update )

Some sectors are intensely optimistic about investors’ shift in focus. In a recent article for CNN Money, Steve Hargreaves writes: “Many analysts believe electric cars will begin replacing internal combustion engines… Since the battery is the most expensive component in an electric car, the conventional wisdom has it that whoever controls the battery market may ultimately control the auto industry.” We love that kind of thinking, but we are cautious that the “conventional wisdom” may over-simplify the relationship between the battery market and the auto industry. For example, who “controls” the auto market today? The major auto original equipment manufacturers? The battery makers? The fuel companies?

Southington officers try out three-wheel electric vehicle ( EVHUB.BIZ EV news updates )

SOUTHINGTON - Visitors to the Apple Harvest Festival may have noticed a police officer riding around on an unusual three-wheeled scooter - the T3 Personal Electric Mobility Vehicle.

It was on loan from MHQ, a company that provides the Southington Police Department with police equipment.

"It's a product that is fairly new to the East Coast," said Steven Hershmen, MHQ branch manager. "We are trying to get that rolled out and introduced as a more stable platform of vehicle. We're interested in getting feedback about it."

Several police departments across the country have been using the two-wheel Segway vehicles. But Hershmen says the T3's third wheel adds stability. Instead of leaning to turn the Segway, which can be problematic in a crowded situation, the T3 turns with handlebars, Hershmen said.

"The way that it is steered, the handlebars control the left to right. On the Segway, if you got bumped and the handle goes left, you go left," Sgt. Lowell DePalma said about the T3 vehicle. "The movement doesn't work like that. You turn it with the handlebars like you would a bicycle or a motorcycle."

Toyota Wants California Low-Carbon Credits for Its Battery Cars ( EVHUB.BIZ EV news update )

Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest seller of hybrid vehicles, said potentially valuable emissions credits that California plans to give to utilities for supporting rechargeable cars should go to automakers instead.
Carmakers absorbed the costs to develop advanced vehicles to meet state requirements, Kevin Webber, Toyota’s U.S. general manager for regulation and certification engineering, said in comments filed last week with the California Public Utilities Commission. “Any societal benefit from the low-carbon-fuel aspect of these vehicles, especially the generation of credits, must accrue to the auto manufacturer,” he said.
The most populous U.S. state begins a program next year to cut carbon intensity of transportation fuels 10 percent by 2020 to pare emissions of gases linked to climate change. To entice utilities to accommodate demand growth spurred by charging of electric cars, the state plans to give credits that can be sold to fuel makers that need to offset carbon in their products.

More news on this story @ http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601080&sid=aRintGBhdP7Q
Toyota, General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. and other carmakers are preparing to sell models powered wholly or in part by rechargeable batteries. California requires the biggest carmakers to sell such vehicles, which are still costly because of the lithium-ion batteries that propel them.
The value of the credits hasn’t been set, and trading isn’t likely to begin until at least 2011. State regulators also are reviewing whether utility rates may need to be increased to cover the cost of charging infrastructure for electric cars.

Smith Electric Vehicles begins production at KCI; location of permanent plant uncertain( EVHUB.BIZ EV News Update )

Smith Electric Vehicles has begun limited assembly operations locally, but economic development officials expect a major struggle next year to keep the British import here for the long haul.
The first 14 employees are working at a temporary facility at Kansas City International Airport, with 40 expected to be on the payroll by the end of the year, said Jeff Kaczmarek, president and CEO of the Kansas City Economic Development Corp. A limited number of the battery-powered delivery vans are expected to be assembled this month.
The big question, however, is whether Kansas City will be able to hold onto Smith Electric should the orders begin in earnest and the company move forward with building a full-scale plant.
Smith Electric signed only a one-year lease last summer on the 80,000-square-foot former aircraft maintenance building, with an initial investment estimated at $5 million.
“Smith Electric Vehicles is being heavily courted by a variety of other communities for their permanent facility,” Kaczmarek said Monday. “We have a toehold, but we’re in fierce competition with other states, and we have to aggressively move on a variety of fronts.”
Bryan Hansel, CEO of Smith Electric, could not be reached for comment.

Infiniti announced October 8 that they will introduce their first hybrid ever in 2011 with their M35 Hybrid luxury sedan.

The 2012 M35 hybrid will be in sale across 33 countries sometime in 2011, according to the manufacturer. Gasoline and diesel versions of the M35 will be introduced with equal reach in spring 2010, marking the worldwide debut of the all-new Infiniti M line.
Infiniti is already a common brand in the US and Japan but the line has only recently been introduced in Europe.
Fuel economy and other details were not released, but the four-door midsize sedan will be aimed more at performance than fuel efficiency, seeking to compete with the recently announced Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW hybrids.

Advanced Storage Battery Market from Hybrid Electric Vehicles to Cell Phones ( prminds.com ) - EVHUB.BIZ news updates

Bharatbook.com included a new report on "Advanced Storage Battery Market: from Hybrid Electric Vehicles to Cell Phones" which provides a concise, focused look on the world of rechargeable batteries

Advanced Storage Battery Market: from Hybrid Electric Vehicles to Cell Phones report ( http://www.bharatbook.com/Market-Research-Reports/Advanced-Storage-Battery-Market-from-Hybrid-Electric-Vehicles-to-Cell-Phones.html ) assess Whether it is a battery for the latest laptop, energy storage for a hybrid electric vehicle, or backup power for a remote telecommunications site, everyone wants a battery that has the highest energy density, best safety factor, and longest life in term of discharge cycles and ease of maintenance while still being environmentally friendly. These are the drivers behind rechargeable battery research around the world today. Rechargeable batteries, also known as storage batteries, are a continuing strong market, with worldwide sales of $36 billion in 2008. The rechargeable battery market will rise to $51 billion by 2013. Lithium-ion is the battery chemistry of choice for future generations of portable electronics and hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. In 2008, lithium-ion battery research had more funding than all other battery technologies combined. Nanotechnology and chemistry advances in electrode design are the key research topics that companies are using to push lithium-ion to be the dominant energy storage technology in the future.

The portable rechargeable battery market, of which lithium-ion has a 75% share, is the fastest growing segment of the rechargeable battery market, showing world market growth of 20% in 2008. Nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries, still important for power tools and back-up systems, will decline rapidly in market share by 2013 due to stricter environmental controls on cadmium. And Ni-MH will see its market share slowly erode due to increasing lithium-ion market share and new silver-zinc and nickel-zinc rechargeable battery chemistries that are coming to market. But despite the growing portable rechargeable battery market share, tried and true lead-acid battery technology continues to head rechargeable battery sales with a U.S. rechargeable battery market share of 79% in 2008. Current research using carbon based cathodes means that we will see lead acid batteries hold their traditional stronghold markets of automotive, industrial, and telecommunications backup markets.

France to spend US$2.2 billion on network of electric car charging stations ( gizmag.com) - EVHUB.BIZ News update

As France’s car-makers push their plans to increase sales and give motorists more electric and hybrid-powered vehicle choices, the French Government has added its support by announcing it intends to spend €1.5 billion (about US$2.2 billion) on creating a battery-charging network for electric vehicles across the country. Part of its spend will also go towards further encouragement of clean vehicle technology and battery manufacturing.
The government says it will also make the installation of charging stations obligatory in new apartment blocks with parking lots, starting in 2012, and office parking lots by 2015. Environment Minister Jean-Louis Borloo told a press conference that a group of public and private fleet operators has already identified a need to purchase 50,000 electric vehicles through to 2015, and the government hopes this figure could be raised to 100,000 by pooling purchasing power.

S Korea to mass produce electric cars starting in 2011

Yonhap reported that South Korea plans to speed up mass production of electric vehicles to better cope with global environmental protection trends and high fuel prices.

The plan, outlined at a meeting of economic policymakers chaired by President Mr Lee Myung bak, calls for full scale production of electricity driven cars in the second half of 2011 from the original target date of around 2013.

Wireless, On-Road Electric Car Charging Could be a Game Changer (matternetwork.com ) - EVHUB.BIZ update

A German supplier of electronics and powertrain design to most of the major automakers for the last 25 years has just secured a patent that could be a game changer for electric vehicle adoption. Their technology would allow electric vehicles to be charged as they drive over any road embedded with a recessed wireless recharging strip, using electromagnetic induction.
Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr (IAV) says the technology will be available commercially within 3 years, is insensitive to weather conditions, and is not susceptible to mechanical wear.
As Wilfried Nitschke from IAV says, “The road is then the range extender.”
The concept of on-the-go roadway recharging for electric vehicles has been out there for a while. In August Nissan floated the idea along with closer-to-fruition ideas like wireless charging stands for the garage.
In fact, it is not untested technology. DARPA has long funded similar work at the PATH program at Berkeley; moving automated buses along set “tracks”, which is a relatively efficient way for buses to operate. Recently university researchers at the Korean Advanced Institute Of Science Technology have also been able to achieve 80% efficient transmission from the road up through a 1 cm gap, or 60% effective transmission when the space widened to 12 cm (nearly 5?) when they tested the technology to move a bus.

Service Vehicles Plug Into Electric Alternative ( cleantechnica.com ) - EVHUB.BIZ update

As many car makers are coming out with electric and hybrid vehicle options that appeal to the average driver, there’s hope that more of these alternative fuel options will be seen on the streets of North America and worldwide. However, with so many service vehicles on the street still contributing to carbon emissions, the impact of regular drivers making the change to electric vehicles just might not be as beneficial to the carbon footprint if these fleet vehicles do not get on board. Stepping up to the plate and the challenge, and pledging to plug into the electric alternative are the government and other private businesses who have voiced intent to purchase electric vehicles my makers like Ford over the next few years.
