Daimler to deploy 250 electric Smart cars in US cities this fall

The Smart ForTwo electric vehicle promises an 82-mile range on a single charge
Motor manufacturer Daimler will launch its electric micro-car, the Smart ForTwo, in the United States this fall.
The company is aiming to catch the latest urban trend for more cleaner transport in urban areas with a roll-out of 250 electric vehicles in select regions of the country in October.
The Smart car is being distributed via Smart USA, a subsidiary of auto dealers Penske Automotive Group, Inc., headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Volvo to Deliver 10 C30 Electric Vehicles to Göteborg Energi; First Elements of Test Fleet

Volvo Cars and energy company Göteborg Energi signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation in the area of electrical vehicles and recharge infrastructure. Under the agreement, Volvo will provide 10 Volvo C30 Electric cars (earlier post), with delivery starting during this autumn.
The cars in the test fleet are equipped with advanced measuring instruments to gather data about how parameters such as driving habits and charging patterns affect the battery and its lifetime in the electric car. Volvo is targeting a broader release of the vehicle in 2013.

SA’s electric vehicle pioneer unveils three-wheel concept car

Electric vehicles are not new to South Africa. Carel Snyman, who headed up power utility Eskom’s electric vehicle programme for many years, says his team developed a prototype electric vehicle which was exhibited in France. The Kruger Park also made use of several electric vehicles, to name but a few examples.
Ironically, the reason the now short-on-juice Eskom started the programme was that it wanted to stimulate electricity demand, especially during off-peak periods when the electricity tap was still open, but nobody used it. Eskom terminated its electric vehicle project in 2002, as the oil price tanked to $10 a barrel, and the hype grew around hydrogen as the fuel of the future.

Electric car demand outstrips supply... again

    Preorders for Nissan's LEAF electric car have already surpassed the planned capacity for the car's first year, Nissan has said.
    Already 19,000 LEAF vehicles have been ordered in the United States and Japan, although the Japanese carmaker plans to produce only 10,000 by March 2011, according to auto industry website Automotive News.
    Nissan will now screen customers who have preordered the vehicle to ensure that their proposed use of the vehicle is suited to the LEAF, Nissan EV chief Andy Palmer told Automotive News.
