Electric vehicles society seeks stringent regulations for EV players - wheelsunplugged.com

At a time when a regulatory body appears an unwelcome guest for any industry, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) which currently has 30 members from two, three and four wheelers besides the auto components manufacturers is seeking stringent regulatory norms to be imposed on players in the sector with the help of Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). ARAI is an authorised testing agency under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, since 1989, as notified by the Ministry of Shipping Road Transport and Highways, for testing and certifying vehicles and engines.
According to a senior representative of a leading electric two-wheeler company,” We are asking ARAI to make low-speed vehicle norms more stringent to restrict the entry of non-serious players in the sector. There are four-five serious players in the market, while the rest are simply fly-by-night operators, as told by the representative to ‘The Hindu Business Line’.

Electric vehicles proposed to be operated in the Universiade Venue - szcpost.com

The development of electric vehicle industry in Shenzhen is now receiving its spring. As one of the thirteen pilot cities for demonstration and promotion of energy saving and new energy automobiles in China, Shenzhen is planning to arrange demonstrated operation lines for electric vehicles preferentially in the municipal scenic areas, major roads, coastal lines, biological scenic areas, the venue of the 26th Universiade and the venue of the 25th World Electric Vehicle Fair, according to the municipal traffic administrative department.
During the NPC and CPPCC sessions this year, CPPCC member Yang Zijiang pointed out in the Proposal that, after the financial crisis, clean energy vehicles have already become a growth point of the new industry that is ready to come out and the electric vehicle industry is also one of the engines for the world economy recovery. He suggested operating the electric vehicles on the public bus lines on a trial base through the governmental subsidies and at the same time implementing favorable policies to encourage the electric vehicle industry chain to settle in Shenzhen.

Lee Vows Full Support for Electric Car Industry

President Lee Myung-bak is looking to make the Korea's car industry the world's best. While noting the fierce competition in the global auto market, the President highlighted the rising importance of electric cars given growing concerns over environmental issues.

Presiding over a regular economic meeting at a car company's research center on Thursday, Lee promised that the government will fully support the industry in developing the core technology necessary to build electric cars.

On the same day related ministries announced plans to start mass producing electric cars by 2011 instead of 2013. To that end the government plans to financially support automakers' research and development efforts in creating "green" car technology and provide tax breaks and direct subsidies to customers who buy such cars.

Audi will build electric sports car

It's official: Audi's e-tron is a go.
Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen says an electric vehicle based on the high-performance e-tron concept will debut in the United States in two to three years.
The sleek two-seat sports car was unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show last month, but at the time Audi would not confirm plans to produce it. Now de Nysschen says the car is on its way.
"I expect we will see running examples in the next 24 months," he says.

Electric Cars in India: Why So Few? ( Published: October 08, 2009 in India Knowledge@Wharton )

With the rise of environmentalism and the high cost of gasoline, it would seem that the electric car would take off. Not so fast, says Bangalore-based writer Shoba Narayan in this opinion piece. Although companies like the Reva Electric Car Company are advancing the cause and major auto makers are likely to follow suit, Indian consumers need to be convinced they will achieve substantial savings and that there is enough infrastructure in place to support electric vehicles before they will be willing to open their wallets.
India has millions of people to house, power grids to expand and factories to fuel. They all involve hydrocarbons. How, then, is a developing economy to grow sustainably? One answer may lie in a small electric car being manufactured right here in Bangalore.
The Reva Electric Car Company (RECC) just announced a plan to build its second manufacturing unit, which some say will be the largest such facility in the world. Naturally, the new factory will meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) ratings standards, with rainwater harvesting, solar power and natural ventilation. With a capacity for 30,000 cars, the facility will be operational in two years, according to the company. RECC also plans to develop a larger sedan that will comfortably seat four, compared to its zippy but tiny current model. More importantly, the new Reva L-ion will have a range of 120 kilometers compared to the current model's 80 kilometers per charge. While the current car battery takes a few hours to charge, the new model will achieve 90% of its charge in an hour using a fast-charge port option. All very good -- but why aren't customers lining up?

Test drive: the all-electric Tesla Roadster ( gizmag.com )

While the big news recently from Tesla has been its Model S vehicle, U.S. government loans to the company, and a plan for using the Model S platform for several new products including a minivan, crossover vehicle, and a utility van, we decided it was worth taking a closer look at the Tesla vehicle that you can buy now.
It's just been a few months since Tesla announced that it has achieved its first month of profitability, primarily based upon the strength of their Roaster product. To date, they've sold over 700 of the vehicles mostly in the U.S. and Europe, and they recently completed a 241 mile alternative energy rally in Monte Carlo, a feat previously impossible for a production electric vehicle.

scooter diaries ( Business standard )

Mahindra & Mahindra wants to do a Scorpio in scooters. Will it succeed?.

India is the second-largest market for two-wheelers in the world, next only to China. In 2008-09, Indians bought over 7.4 million two-wheelers – motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, step-thrus and electric two-wheelers. This year, the market has so far grown at over 17 per cent. If the trend holds for the rest of the year, 2009-10 could end with two-wheeler sales in excess of 8 million.
The opportunity was simply too good for Mahindra & Mahindra to resist for long. In the last few years, it has evolved from tractors to commercial vehicles and passenger cars. Two-wheelers were the only gap in its portfolio. If plugged, the company could straddle the entire spectrum of automobiles. There were advantages and disadvantages. First the negatives: The market for two-wheelers is as different from utility vehicles as cheese from chalk. And motorcycles comprise over 80 per cent of the market. The competition is cutthroat. It is not easy to gain an inch from street fighters such as Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto and TVS.

Understanding of various features observed in existing Electric bikes

As already discussed, electric bike drive system is power electronic based and embedded based control. Due to this, this technology got the advantage of implementation of various value adding features. This story is true for electric bikes from any country i.e. India, China, Taiwan or any other. In this article we will discuss these features in brief

  1. Current Limit – As Electric bike is powered by battery, the power drawn from the battery depends on the load and hence there should be control over the current drawn from the battery otherwise, battery & motor life may effect. This can be easily implemented by power electronic based BLDC Controller using some hardware and software implementations. This feature allows only fixed current and limits the maximum current to the programmed value. Bike would continue to run in this condition.
  2. Over Current cut-off: As battery current drawn is out of our control and is limited by load, road conditions, we can set a maximum current point, where the drive system will shut down automatically and only can start with ignition key restarted.
  3. Low/High speed set: This features is good parental feature which will set the bike to run at two different speeds. This allows the costumer to fix the speed based on their urgency. Low speed set will give more drive range but of course kills your time.
  4. Cruise control: This feature being used in aero planes & luxury cars but now available only in electric bikes due to its easy implementation with its technology. Using Cruise control feature the vehicle can be continuously run at a desired speed and throttle can be released.
