ELECTRIC BICYCLES, MOTORCYCLES, AND SCOOTERS TO GAIN INCREASING ACCEPTANCE WORLDWIDE

Increasingly accepted as capable, even appealing, forms of transportation, particularly in densely populated urban areas, electric two-wheel vehicles, a category that includes electric bicycles, motorcycles, and scooters, will spread rapidly over the next several years.According to a recent report fromPike Research, worldwide sales of electric two-wheel vehicles (E2WVs) are expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.4% through 2016.
“While electric two-wheel vehicles tend to be a lifestyle choice in North America and much of Western Europe, in the developing world they’re used more as primary means of transportation,” says industry analyst Dave Hurst. “Rising incomes and increased urbanization are driving the need for, and the ability to purchase, reliable transportation, and electric two-wheel vehicles fill a growing niche.” Battery improvements that extend the range and speed of the vehicles, Hurst adds, will also hasten adoption of e-motorcycles and e-scooters.

Fleet operators pushing toward 'green'

If the average Joe wants to reduce his environmental impact, he might switch to a car that uses less gas or one that runs on alternative fuels.
But what would be the environmental impact if the people who operate hundreds, even thousands, of vehicles decided to do the same?
Turns out, a number of them are doing just that.
Driven in part by tougher federal and state emissions rules and in part by the recession and uncertain fuel prices, many major companies have decided it's good business to reduce the environmental impact of their fleets, industry experts say. As a result, owners of many of the nation's largest commercial fleets are experimenting with alternative-fuel vehicles.
Telecommunications giant AT&T Inc. , which is headquartered in Dallas and has the nation's largest commercial fleet with more than 77,000 vehicles, is in the early stages of a 10-year ,

Nissan’s Leaf electric car gets sound effect for pedestrian warnings

Eco Factor: Eco-friendly hybrid car adds noise for safety measures.
It seems like being extra quiet did not work for Nissan’s much-awaited hatchback, the LEAF. Due to the guidelines for pedestrian warnings in electric vehicles that make little noise when in operation, Nissan has added sound effects to its otherwise nearly silent vehicle. After considering a variety of sounds like chimes, motorlike, futuristic, the company finally selected a soft whine that fluctuates in intensity with the car’s speed.

Car review: electric cars

If you have ever driven a remote-control toy car, you will have experienced – in miniature – the pros and cons of driving a full-scale, grown-up electric vehicle (EV). You'll have appreciated the instant, clean power harnessed to the exhilarating performance of the high-revving, very quiet and surprisingly powerful engine. You'll also have developed a loathing for batteries. Too many, too big, too expenisve, too weak…
The battery problem has been such a sticking point that many manufacturers have put all their eggs in the petrol-hybrid basket as an eco solution to the future of motoring. Hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, have both an electric and a back-up petrol engine.
A few makers, however, have been plugging away at a purely electric solution, and the fruit of their labour is appearing on our roads. The breakthrough came a few years ago with the introduction of the lithium-ion battery. These already power your mobile phone and laptop. They are powerful, relatively light, have a high energy-to-weight ratio, recharge quickly and hold their charge when not in use.

Nissan Motor Co. has unveiled to the press a prototype of its "Leaf" electric vehicle, which will be released in December in Japan, the United States and Europe.
The five-seater electric car can travel 160 kilometers on a single charge (the recharge time is eight hours with a 200-volt power source). With significant engine noise reduction being typical of electric vehicles, compared to gasoline cars, the Leaf has been fitted with a pseudo car running sound-emitting system to alert pedestrians to its presence.

SA’s electric vehicle pioneer unveils three-wheel concept car

Electric vehicles are not new to South Africa. Carel Snyman, who headed up power utility Eskom’s electric vehicle programme for many years, says his team developed a prototype electric vehicle which was exhibited in France. The Kruger Park also made use of several electric vehicles, to name but a few examples.
Ironically, the reason the now short-on-juice Eskom started the programme was that it wanted to stimulate electricity demand, especially during off-peak periods when the electricity tap was still open, but nobody used it. Eskom terminated its electric vehicle project in 2002, as the oil price tanked to $10 a barrel, and the hype grew around hydrogen as the fuel of the future.

Electric car demand outstrips supply... again

NISSAN
Preorders for Nissan's LEAF electric car have already surpassed the planned capacity for the car's first year, Nissan has said.
Already 19,000 LEAF vehicles have been ordered in the United States and Japan, although the Japanese carmaker plans to produce only 10,000 by March 2011, according to auto industry website Automotive News.

Is the country ready for Electric Vehicles?

YES:More than a decade ago when Mahindra and Mahindra was still largely a jeep and tractor maker, we had decided to look beyond our immediate focus of the automobile sector. We took on the mantle to look for environment-friendly technologies. Thus, Bijlee, the all electric, zero emission vehicle, was born, to decongest the busy and polluted roads.
At M&M, we have always believed that innovation is the key to success and have effectively combined it with a concern for the environment. In an endeavour to create eco-friendly products, of which Bijlee was an early example, we had also unveiled the bio-diesel Scorpio and Bolero vehicles. These were clearly tiny steps taken in the direction towards combating climate change, through market-driven solutions.

Taking the Smart Fortwo Electric Car For a Test Drive

I was feeling good as a truck cab packed with construction workers were genuinely excited as I pulled along side them at a red light. One guy gave me a thumbs up, another asked how much my ride retailed for. Then, two lights up the road, the reaction to my smart fortwo electric drive car was slightly more critical.
"Hey guys, look at that funny little car," a father shouted to his two small boys as he pointed at my tiny white and green convertible. I suspect smart cars get that a lot: A mix of wonder, excitement and ridicule. Dropping in an electric motor is likely to only increase all of those reactions.
Smart USA, a subsidiary of Penske Automotive Group, will roll out 250 EVs in the U.S. beginning in October. That's small potatoes compared to what the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf plan to produce later this year, but Smart is happy being niche.

Sen. Kerry: Hybrid cars shouldn’t be too quiet

U.S. Sen. John Kerry is trying to make sure hybrid and electric cars aren’t too quiet.

The Search for Cheaper, Lighter Car Batteries

The Nissan Leaf, an electric car that will go on sale this fall, is priced at $33,000. It's a $16,500 subcompact car that costs double that thanks to a battery estimated to cost $16,500. The eStar, an electric truck being developed by Navistar, will sell for $150,000 because it will tote a battery that costs at least $75,000. Cost isn't the only problem. Both the Leaf and the eStar will be limited to 100 miles of driving on a charge.

Member of the Audi Board for Production Frank Dreves: "The award is another component for ensuring that our production remains fit in the future."
INGOLSTADT, Germany, Jun 7, 2010 - What will the production of an Audi look like if the automobile no longer has a gearbox? This is the type of question that candidates for the Audi Production Award must ask themselves. Students and scientists can now begin submitting their creative concepts for the automobile production of the future. A prestigious jury will recognize the best idea on this year's topic, "The Production of Electric Automobiles," this fall.
"Audi lives for 'Vorsprung durch Technik' in more than just its automobiles. We are also committed to innovative technologies in production, and electric mobility will play a particularly important role here in the years ahead," says Frank Dreves, Member of the Audi Board for Production. "We want to involve as many creative minds as possible to keep our production fit in the future, which is why we have created the Audi Production Award."
