GM reduces shock at Volt's high price

General Motors has priced its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid at US$41,000 ($56,280), including a shipping fee, and plans to tell consumers the cost covers a peace of mind that's missing from other electric vehicles.

The price of the Volt, which goes on sale in the US in October or November, compares with the US$32,780 Nissan wants for its Leaf electric vehicle, which goes on sale in December. Buyers of both cars are eligible for a US$7500 federal tax credit.

GM says the Volt can travel as far as 65km on battery power before it switches to its petrol-powered engine. The Leaf is an all-electric vehicle advertised as having an estimated 160km range before drivers need to recharge.

GM's research and its experience with the EV1 electric vehicle in the 1990s indicated customers interested in electric vehicles also wanted the peace of mind provided by the Volt's onboard engine, said US marketing chief Joel Ewanick.

GM invests in electric vehicle start-up Bright

General Motors has invested in electric vehicle company Bright Automotive, marking the first investment by the auto giant's venture-capital arm.

The companies said Tuesday that the investment by recently created GM Ventures for an undisclosed amount will give GM a minority stake in Anderson, Ind.-based Bright and accelerate Bright's plans to manufacture a plug-in hybrid van that can get up to 100 miles per gallon.

GM to recharge electric car after Reva split

Calcutta, June 13: General Motors (GM) is looking forward to developing an electric car for India on its own. It had to drop its plan for the electric Spark following a break-up with Reva.

The American car maker, which is expected to launch the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, Chevrolet Volt, in the US by the year-end, will “certainly not bring the Volt to India”.

“The country is still not ready for such plug-in hybrid vehicles. The expensive Chevrolet Volt may get few Indian buyers, who are fascinated to drive a green car. It will certainly not be a huge success in a sensitive market such as India,” GM India vice-president (marketing, sales and after sales) Ankush Arora said.

In March, GM had said the eSpark would not reach customers by the promised date. It had also moved part of its operations back to Detroit, in an early sign of its faltering partnership with Reva.

GM to launch Chevrolet Volt in 2011

GM, after the split with Reva electric in India, will delay its launch of electric vehicles. Earlier, the company planned to sell the electric vehicles from December 2010 onwards.

The American car maker informed that they will sell the Chevrolet Volt from December this year in U.S. and from 2011 in India.

Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle which uses an internal combustion engine to recharge the battery. GM expects to sell the electric vehicles at the rate of 4000-5000 units per annum.

General Motors may launch electric vehicle in India

US car-maker General Motors [ Images ] on Friday said it would either launch or showcase an electric vehicle in the Indian market next year, but ruled out competing with the Tata Nano [ Images ] on price point.

The President and Managing Director of GM India [ Images ], Karl Slym, said here: "I would like to say that you will start to see opportunities for sale (electric vehicle) to you or demonstration (in India) next year."

He said this electric vehicle would be a "pure" GM car and not in collaboration with any other player. Asked if GM plans to launch a car to directly compete with the Tata Nano, Slym told reporters on the sidelines of the Karnataka [ Images ] government-organised Global Investors' Meet here, "It's true that we are looking at (launching) cars in various different segments." But he added, "I don't think it's fair to say we are trying to launch a Nano."

GM to launch electric vehicles on its own

After passing on the official word that the Indian subsidiary of the American automaker General Motors will be ending its tie-up with Reva, the company further said that it will be developing the electric vehicles on its own at its Headquarters at Detroit.
The announcement came after the electric car company; Reva sold its majority stake to the Indian conglomerate, Mahindra & Mahindra. The India head of the GM’s operations, Karl Slym has recently said that the company does not see any value now in its agreement with Reva and would like to go alone in the electric car market.
