Mahindra mulls electric vehicles for US market

Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra plans to enter the US market with its electric vehicles from group firm REVA's portfolio within next five years, a top official said today.

The announcement comes at a time when the homegrown firm is fighting a legal battle with its erstwhile sole US distributor for delaying the launch of its pick-up truck in the American nation.

"US is an important and big market for electric vehicles. We are looking at that market. We will be there before our target of full global presence in next five years, but exactly when, that we have not decided yet," Mahindra REVA Electric Vehicles chief of operations R Chandramouli said.

At present, the US government provides various incentives to the tune of USD 7,500 on electric vehicles, he added.

In May this year, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) acquired 55.2 per cent stake in Chetan Maini-promoted REVA Electric Car Company through a combination of equity purchase and a fresh equity infusion of over Rs45 crore into the company.

Seoul public transport to shift to electric vehicles

Seoul, November 19 - Seoul city aims to switch half of its buses and taxis to electric power and set up recharging facilities throughout the capital over the coming decade.

The measures are part of plans announced by Mayor Oh Se-hoon to transform Seoul into a leading green-car city.

They include providing 120,000 electric cars by 2020, switching 50 percent of public transportation and 10 percent of automobiles to battery-only electric vehicles, and establishing 110,000 charging stations across the city.

Lights seem brighter in Paris auto show

The Paris Motor Show, the world's first auto salon, is shaping up to be perhaps the most notable show this year.
Organisers are promising more than 100 world premieres when the doors open at the Paris Expo site on September 30 for two days of press previews. The public show dates are October 2-17.
All told, the number of product introductions at the Mondial de l'Automobile could exceed those at the auto shows in Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York combined during last year.
The growth of the biennial Paris show — at the last event, in 2008, the wraps came off 80 new cars — suggests that the world's automakers are increasingly comfortable with the prospect of parading their debutantes down a runway in front of the fashionable French.


LG Chem Strikes Battery Deal with Mitsubishi

LG Chem will now advance into the Japanese market for secondary batteries for electric vehicles. 

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Sunday said Mitsubishi Motors and LG Chem are jointly developing a lithium-ion battery system for electric vehicles. Mitsubishi was the seventh largest maker of finished sedans in Japan last year.   

LG Chem already has similar deals with GM and Ford in the U.S., Volvo in Europe and Changan Automobile in China.   

According to an industry insider, the two firms are developing a technique of installing power control and crash safety devices on the lithium-ion batteries made by LG Chem. 

The new batteries will most likely be used for electric vehicles that Mitsubishi will release in 2012 or some models of new plug-in hybrids it will introduce in 2013.

GM Daewoo electric car to raise global competition

Korea is set to become the main test bed for General Motor’s new generation of electric vehicles after GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co., auto giant’s local unit, yesterday unveiled its first compact-sized EV model.
The prototype vehicle, based on GM Daewoo’s Lacetti Premiere, can travel up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) on a single charge. Earlier this month, Hyundai Motor launched its own EV, the BlueOn. The GM Daewoo EV is powered by high-performance battery and propulsion systems made by LG Chem and LG Electronics, respectively, while 50 other Korean companies took part in the development process, according to the company. Road tests of the EV in Seoul will begin shortly to gauge consumer response to the model, which will be known as the “Chevrolet Cruze” in foreign markets.
The EV boasts a 31-kilowatt-hour electric battery that can generate a maximum power output of 150 kilowatts in transit. The vehicle can reach 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in 8.2 seconds and has a maximum speed of 165 kilometers per hour. The battery can be fully charged in 8 to 10 hours on a standard household 220-volt outlet, according to tests.

Plug-in Electric Vehicle Sales to Hit 3.2 million Units by 2015

U.S. will be 26% of the market with China at 27% of the market
President Obama is putting a lot of emphasis during his term on moving America towards greener vehicles to reduce pollution and the need for foreign oil. Key vehicle technologies that will help enable us to make the move are hybrid and electric vehicles. Growth in both of those vehicle markets is set to boom over the next five years.

Pike Research has announced a new report that looks at the growth of the battery power electric (BEV) and plug-in electric hybrid vehicle (PEHV) market over the next five years from 2010 to 2015 and how that market will grow around the world. According to the research firm, over the next five years China will emerge as the top adopter of PEHV and BEVs with 3.2 million sold over that period for an annual compounded growth rate of 106 percent.

Coming in a close second for the same period according to Pike Research will be the United States. The research firm estimates that in the U.S. 841,000 of these vehicles will be sold accounting for 26 percent of the global market. China by comparison is expected to move 880,000 PEHVs and BEVs for 27 percent of the global market.

Vehicles may get letter grades for fuel efficiency

Vehicles would get an "A+" to "D" grade, and the median grade would be a "B-." No vehicle would get a failing grade. To get an "A," a vehicle would have to average at least 59 miles per gallon; to avoid a "D" a vehicle would have to average at least 14 mpg.

Fully electric vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf, would get an "A+," while a plug-in hybrid would get an "A." Many hybrids like the Ford Fusion hybrid and Toyota Prius would get an "A-." The Ferrari 612 would be one of those gas-hungry high-performance vehicles that would get a "D."

No van would rate higher than a "C+" and most SUVs would get a "C+ or lower. Some versions of the Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, Cadillac CTS, Lexus 570 and GMC Sierra 15 would all get a "C-."

The move could dissuade some consumers from buying the biggest, most polluting vehicles on the roads. The new design also will provide consumers with an estimate of the expected fuel cost savings over five years, compared to an average gasoline-powered vehicle of the same model year.

The second proposed label would retain the label's focus on miles per gallon and annual fuel costs, while updating the overall design and adding the required new comparison information on fuel economy and emissions.

Auto in India

India is one of the few markets that saw growing passenger car sales during the recession of the past two years. In fact, in 2009-10, it recorded its highest volumes ever. A new KPMG report, The Indian Auto Industry: Evolving Dynamics, projects that the twin phenomena of low car penetration and rising incomes, when combined with increasing affordability of cars, will continue to drive India’s auto demand upwards. While quite a few new vehicles launched in the Indian market have been developed locally, vehicle affordability remains a significant concern. Although the price of an average motorcycle in India (about $900) is comparable to the average per capita income, the price of passenger cars have a long way to go. Although the entry level car (Nano) is priced at around $2,500, the passenger cars market could grow multi-fold if there is a breakthrough of another price level in the years to come.

In recent times, electric two-wheelers have ridden on the back of customer demand for vehicles with lower running costs, as well as some incentives to users in the form of little or no duties on electric vehicles (and parts) in areas such as New Delhi.

Could future electric vehicles be noisier?

For many consumers, electric vehicles (EVs) have the additional advantage of being much quieter than conventional-fuelled cars.
However, road safety campaigners have called for EVs to be louder in order to alert pedestrians of oncoming traffic.
This has led Toyota to bring in an Approaching Vehicle Audible System for its Prius hybrid.

Electric Vehicles for US TARDEC

With the rapid expansion of the electric vehicles engulfing most of today's world, it was only a matter of time until the military began contemplating the idea of operating environmentally friendly vehicles while going out to conquer the world.

Although this is not the first time the EV world merge with the military one (remember the hybrid tanks to be tested in the Army's new Ground Systems Power and Energy Laboratory), it is the first time a pure electric vehicle will begin testing in the service.

The vehicle is being manufactured by Canadian company Rapid Electric Vehicles (REV, a Honeywell Aerospace subcontractor) and is meant as an Ancillary Power Vehicles (APV). It is powered by a 125 kW permanent magnet AC motor paired with a gearbox drive system that delivers 300 Nm of torque. The REVs will be using Ford Escape and Ford F150 platforms.

Consumers ready to test electric vehicles

How well-received will electric vehicles be? Well, according to a new study, American adults are ready to get behind the wheel.
An online survey by the Consumer Electronics Association has found that 40 per cent of consumers are likely to test drive an electric vehicle. Known asElectric Vehicles: The Future of Driving, the study suggests consumers are enticed by improved environmental quality and potential cost savings.
Despite this apparent enthusiasm, overall awareness of the various types of alternative vehicles appears to be low. Around one third reports they are familiar or very familiar with hybrid vehicles; yet only a quarter are familiar with electric powered cars.

Ace EV Are Bound For Europe

Tata Motors, India’s largest car manufacturer, has announced that its electric vehicles Indica and Ace EV are bound for Europe in the coming months, starting off with the United Kingdom as early as September.
The company is seizing the opportunity out of the UK government’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Grant Programme, a campaign to promote the use of electric vehicles in the country. Tata Motors European Technical Centre had received a £10-million (US$15.642 million) loan to develop the Indica Vista EV for the UK market. The company has invested £25 million ($39.105 million) into the project. Also, Tata Motors has a 72 percent share over Norway’s Miljo Grenland, which specializes in developing innovative solutions for electric vehicles.

Around the World in 80 Days in Electric Vehicles

A group of environmentalists set off from Geneva, Switzerland, traveling in electric vehicles for an "Around the World in 80 Days" trip Monday, CRI reports.
The global tour, named "Zero Race," aims to promote emissions-free transportation and November's world climate conference.
It was organized by Swiss schoolteacher Louis Palmer and won support from the United Nations Environment Program.
Four teams from Switzerland, Germany, Australia and South Korea will join the 30,000-meter excursion, which will take them to 16 countries and 150 cities in the world.

Holy Grail of Electric Vehicles: 30-minute Charging

With electric vehicles coming closer to maturity and mass-market adoption, one crucial stumbling block remains in place: limited range made worse by hours-long charging.
Consumers may dump the idea of buying an EV with a range of 75 to 100 miles because they can only get so far before needing another charge to replenish the vehicles batteries and at present, fully charging an EV can take hours and even an overnight length of time.

Do Electric Vehicles Mean You Should Invest in Coal?

The upcoming crop of electric cars is impacting Wall Street analysts and not just because of potential car sales. Motley Fool, an investment website, advises people to invest in coalbecause zero-emission vehicles such as the upcoming Nissan Leaf will plug into the national electric grid, which is powered largely by coal. While the money men think coal is a good investment, that doesn’t mean renewable resources aren’t making gains.
It will be a long time before wind and solar resources power our electric vehicle fleet — some might say never — and each EV purchased adds the equivalent of a new house to the electric grid, which necessitates more electricity production. This means burning more coal and spewing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is inevitable, right?

Electric Vehicle Choices Expand

One of my basic assumptions about our energy future is that most automobiles will eventually be electrified. That's based on extensive scenario work done with my former colleagues at Texaco, Inc. in the late 1990s. Nothing I've seen since then has changed my view on that. However, vehicle electrification is not necessarily synonymous with "electric vehicle" (EV) in its common usage to connote a car powered only by electricity stored in batteries. It's a much broader category, covering all three electrification options now slated to be available to consumers by year-end: hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and "pure" EVs. It also encompasses fuel cell vehicles, though these have yet to move beyond the test-market stage. The characteristics of the three current varieties of electrified vehicles differ in important ways that will affect both their impact on our energy consumption and their success as consumer products.
