Japan Post Service Co. plans to purchase 1,030 electric vehicles from Zerosports Co., a start-up firm based in Gifu Prefecture, for collection and delivery of mail, sources familiar with the matter said Monday. Under the plan, the mail delivery service arm of Japan Post Holdings Co. will order 30 vehicles in fiscal 2010 through March and 1,000 more in fiscal 2011, they said. The plan follows Japan Post Service's experimental use of some Zerosports electric cars in which it rated their performance highly. Zerosports, which entered the electric car business in 1998, says its electric vehicles loaded with mail can travel for around 100 kilometers on an eight-hour charge.

Electric car demand outstrips supply... again

Preorders for Nissan's LEAF electric car have already surpassed the planned capacity for the car's first year, Nissan has said.
Already 19,000 LEAF vehicles have been ordered in the United States and Japan, although the Japanese carmaker plans to produce only 10,000 by March 2011, according to auto industry website Automotive News.
Nissan will now screen customers who have preordered the vehicle to ensure that their proposed use of the vehicle is suited to the LEAF, Nissan EV chief Andy Palmer told Automotive News.

Nissan's pre-orders of Leaf EV reach FY 2010 target in 2 months
Nissan Motor Co said Monday pre-orders of its Leaf electric vehicles in Japan reached its target of 6,000 units for fiscal 2010 to March next year, only two months after the automaker began accepting the orders.
Nissan said pre-orders, which began April 1 for the domestic market, were strong thanks to customers who recognized the vehicle’s environment-friendly features and affordability as an electric vehicle.
