Shenzhen starts green-car subsidy pilot project

Shanghai, July 7 (Gasgoo.com) On July 6, officials from Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Science, Ministry of Industry and Information and the National Development and Reform Commission gathered in Shenzhen yesterday for the launch ceremony of subsidies for private purchasing of new energy vehicles.

Zhang Shaochun, vice minister of the Ministry of Finance said that the highest subsidy for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is 50,000 yuan ($7,350) per unit while the subsidy for per pure electric vehicle is 60,000 yuan. Thus, the promotion of new energy vehicles took its substantive step in Shenzhen.

Tesla has finally released details of its newest prodigy, the racy-looking electric car known as Roadster 2.5. The vehicle brags a 250 mile maximum driving range.

A rear air diffuser, new grill and front bumper, diffusing vents and ‘directional’ forged wheels give the vehicle a distinctive sporty appearance. Even in extremely hot climates the modified power control system allows ‘spirited driving’.

Some critics, however, are cynical of Tesla’s ‘save-the-world’ campaign that has caught the attention of the media, as well as many investors. 

Senior editor of Fourtune, Adam Lashinsky, one very vocal critic, says "While Tesla drivers may pat themselves on the back because their cars don't emit foul greenhouse gases, half the electricity needed to charge the batteries that make the cars run comes from burning coal."
Wind power may represent around 3% of electricity production in the United States, coal accounts for about 50%.

Nissan to Open U.S.-Based Electric Car Assembly Plant

Nissan has launched one of the first interactive iAd mobile marketing campaigns for the new Apple, Inc. (AAPL) iPhone 4, and it's taking the chance to promote its new all-electric Leaf passenger car. Although hybrid vehicles have been around in the U.S. for years (think Toyota Prius), all-electric cars have been limited to those teeny-tiny, mileage-limited vehicles. Nissan wants to change that with the four-door Leaf sedan.

To help it reach this goal, the company will be producing the Leaf in a new U.S. factory. The new factory will produce the Lithium-ion batteries and complete Leaf automobile assemblies, and will be located in one of Nissan's existing haunts in the U.S. -- Smyrna Tennessee.

Dealers ready to plug in to Volt

Chevrolet dealerships in the area are getting energized for next year's arrival of the Chevrolet Volt.

"I expect it to do well because it's the first practical car on the market," said Bill Guibeaut, sales manager for H&L Chevrolet in New Canaan, who looked over the vehicle at the New York International Auto Show and has orders for three of them. "It's not a golf cart."

General Motors on Thursday announced that the vehicle, which can run for 40 miles on 8 kilowatt hours of electric power before switching over to its gas engine, will be available in Chevy retail locations in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Texas by next year. Dealerships in California, Michigan and Washington, D.C., are slated to receive the Volt in October.

"I'm sure there will be lines for this," said Philip Gray, sales manager for Dan Perkins Chevrolet in Milford, who expects the car to sell in the mid-$30,000 range with applicable tax credits. "It'll be shaped like a sporty sedan."

GM will require Volt dealers to keep one in the store for test drives and have a 240-volt charging station in the dealership to charge the car in three or four hours and specialists on hand for sales and service. The car, which stores the electricity in a lithiuim-ion battery in the rear of the car, also can be charged in about 10 hours from a residential outlet with the use of an 120-volt cord that comes with every car.

Electric vehicles will take part in Fourth of July parade in C-U

CHAMPAIGN – Folks intrigued by innovative electric vehicles can see three of them Sunday in the Fourth of July Parade in Champaign-Urbana.

The most unusual is the TW4XP electric vehicle, made by Fine Mobile of Germany. That vehicle recently qualified as one of 15 finalists in the Progressive Automotive X-Prize competition in Michigan. The competition pits super fuel-efficient vehicles against each other.

The three-wheeled TW4XP can go as fast as 70 miles per hour and gets 100 miles per gallon, according to Martin Moscheid, the chief executive officer of Fine Mobile. His brother, Wolfgang, will drive the vehicle in Sunday's parade.

Parade-goers can also see a TWIKE, driven by Matt Childress of Champaign and made by the same German company. About 960 of those vehicles have been sold worldwide, most of them in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Twenty or so are in the United States.

The third electric vehicle will be the EC3 prototype developed by Sugar Rides, a local company co-founded by Randy Reisinger, Bryan Wilcox, Mercedes Mane and Keeley Kabala.

PETITION IN THE INTEREST OF PUBLIC & NATION AS A WHOLE

A few manufacturers as well as assemblers have begun marketing electric bi wheelers in India, with only one manufacturer for electric cars. However, owing to limitations in range of travel, power & transmission response, these are not popular although these save fast depleting fossil fuel.

While viewing pages of www.interchina-industry.com  I found there are electric bikes with motor up to 3500 watt & even with 750watt motor & 72 volt input current, 65kms maximum speed, 120kms range of travel per charge, 150kg of load carrying capacity are available costing only USD 400 (Rs.23500) FOB.

Chief Justice of India is URGED TO direct the Central Government & State Governments in India, orany other body authorized to do so, for introduction of these electric vehicles with subsidy in pricing, in the interest of public & nation as well for reasons stated below.

Any internal combustion (IC) engine two wheeler yields about 30 to 40 kms. per litre of Petrol inside city + a little of oil, costing about Rs. 60. The same range of 40 kms. is covered by a electric bi wheeler in one full charge of battery consuming one unit of electricity say Rs. 5.

Austin, NY likely to see first Chevy Volts

Austin, Texas, and New York will be among the first cities in the U.S. where the Chevy Volt plug-in electric vehicle will hit the road.

General Motors is expected Thursday to announce that a first run of 8,000 cars will be made available in a handful of cities,The Detroit News reported Thursday.

The announcement is expected to come from GM CEO Edward Whitacre, who is set to address the Austin Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.

AMP electric car advances to finals

BLUE ASH - Developers of the all-electric Saturn Sky conversion by AMP Electric Vehicles learned Wednesday that their car will compete in the finals later this month for a share of the $10 million Progressive Insurance Automotive X prize.

AMP's black Saturn is one of eight vehicles to advance to the finals of the global competition. It will compete in a category to inspire development of alternative-fuel vehicles capable of achieving the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon.

Swiss project brings electric car to Alpine tourism

MEIRINGEN, Switzerland (Reuters) - A pair of sturdy goats led 10 cows with regional and national flags tied to horns and bridles up toward the mountains this week at the launch of a new Swiss eco-project.

Behind the animals came a silent line of 60 brightly colored small cars, which then sped off -- equally silently -- toward the nearest Alpine pass.
"I think just one of those cows made more noise than all of us put together," said bemused Swiss tourism official Federico Somarruga, at the wheel of one of the two-seater automobiles.
The occasion was the launch in central Switzerland of a green tourism project, dubbed Alpmobil, to promote the use of battery-driven electric vehicles -- EVs to the cognoscenti -- by summer visitors to the area some 100 km (63 miles) southeast of the Swiss capital Bern.

Electric vehicle subsidy is under threat

The £5,000 subsidy for the purchase of electric vehicles is under threat, according to the Coalition Government's Business Secretary, Vince Cable.

Cable has said that the Government grant could be scrapped as the new administration seeks to cut costs to reduce the national deficit.

The Government ''can't go around waving a chequebook at British industry,'' said Cable, adding that car makers were no longer in an ''emergency situation''.

However, Cable did say that the Government is not planning to walk away from car manufacturers, but will simply be more selective on how it provides support in the future.

EC to ensure electric vehicles charger interoperability

The European Commission has handed on June 2010 a mandate for the development of relevent standards on  common charging system for electric cars, scooters and bicycles to the European Standardisation Organisations bodies, CEN-CENELEC and ETSI. Thanks to this mandate plugs and connectors will use the same standard all across Europe, providing a true European solution independently of brands or countries. The Commission expects that the standard will be ready by mid-2011.

On June 29th 2010,  European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani handed a European Commission mandate for the development of the relevant standard for electric vehicles chargers to the President of CEN-CENELEC David Dossett, CEN-CENELEC´s Director General Elena Santiago Cid and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) General Assembly Chair John Philips. These new standards are aimed to ensure that all types of electric vehicles and their batteries are charged both safely and easily in all EU Member States.

Washington to build “electric highway”

Washington has launched the nation’s first “electric highway,” a network of electric vehicle recharging stations along Interstate 5. The project will be a partnership between the state’s transportation and commerce departments and is supported by $1.32 in federal Recovery Act infrastructure funding. Once implemented, Washington will have the first border to border highway to offer fast charge technology.

The highway stations will support plug-in electric vehicles along the full 276 miles of I-5 between Washington’s borders north and south. The state estimates that nearly 300,000 electric cars will be on Washington’s roads during the next ten years. Right now, almost half of Washington’s emissions come from standard cars.

Study: 670,000 Fuel Cell Vehicles to be Sold Annually Within 10 Years

The United States will lead the way

Pike Research, a market research and consulting firm that focuses on global clean technology markets, conducted a study that predicts 670,000 fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) will sell annually by 2020.
Some auto companies are still focusing their development on electric vehicles (EVs), and as many other surveys indicate, the growth of electric vehicles are expected to surpassfuel cell vehicles. However, Pike Research's study goes against the grain saying otherwise. According to the study, the U.S. will account for 134,049 annual FCV sales of the total 670,000, putting them in the lead for fuel cell vehicle sales. China will be in second place with 129,241 FCV sales and Germany will be in third place with 126,783 total annual sales.
Some believe these are "overly optimistic" results and that Pike Research is assuming that the appropriate refueling infrastructures will be available by 2020. According to fuel cell industry analyst Dave Hurst, "The entire growth of the fuel cell vehicle market balances on two key elements: the growth of hydrogen gas refueling stations and improvements in the cells themselves."
While improvements of fuel cells is in the works, the possible growth of hydrogen gas refueling stations is here. Currently, there is only one personal, zero-emission refueling station for FCV's that runs on sunshine and tap water. It's called a residential hydrogen refueler, and the only one that exists is hidden on the Torrance campus of Honda R&D.

Factory opens in Finland to supply lithium-ion batteries for up to 3,000 electric vehicles

The engineering and construction company M+W Group has successfully completed its first order to build a lithium-ion battery plant in Varkaus (Finland). The plant, which was commissioned by the Finnish battery manufacturer, European Batteries Oy, has now started full volume production.

The new factory in Varkaus has a surface area of 10,000 square metres and manufactures large, lithium-ion based battery packs and systems with an annual production capacity of around 100 megawatt/hours. This means that around 3,000 full-electric cars can be fitted with lithium-ion batteries, although a possible tripling of production is already planned.
