How the electric bike market in India will improve

India has a large business in cycles and petrol bikes. Electric bikes come under middle segment and India is seen as future hub for electric vehicles business. Market is expected to rise by 100% this year and then 200% in the consequent years. But in order to realize this trend, we need to collectively work on the following points.

1. Strict adherence to the quality practices and should meet the automotive standards. Customer should be happy to buy using his hard earned money.

2. Entrepreneurs should take up the projects to manufacture e-bike components i.e. Battery, motors, controllers, chargers, converters, wire harness, chassis etc.

3. Best after sales service will attract the end user. Spare parts should be available easily.

4. Government should give subsidy to EV companies.

Electric bike are most common form of transportation in China. India is seen as future hub for e-bikes business. Within 3 years India now has more than 125 EV companies. Enhancing the quality of life is the ultimate objective and the driving force behind many of the critical decisions we take. However, for this to happen, we as a community need to shift from individualistic mindsets and take responsibility for the environment we live in. It is only then that we would see holistic improvement.

Against the backdrop of environmental concerns and depleting resources, it is imperative not only to preserve what's left but find new alternatives to drive engines of growth in the economy. There are about 250 manufacturers of heavy industrial vehicles worldwide but most do not make EVs. Between them they will make about 700,000 of these vehicles in 2010. Most participants have under $20 million sales yearly. Mid-sized companies have largely vanished in line with marketing theory for maturing markets. This industry was characterised by a dash for market leadership as the market matured, with frequent purchases of competitors. Many participants seek global reach with manufacturing in major markets. Some promote a global brand to support this. Others diffuse their image over many brand names and even have competing subsidiaries. Some specialise in the largest or the smallest machines, in ICE or EV power. By 2015, the demand for heavy industrial electric vehicles will be comparable to that for light industrial/commercial electric vehicles as shown below.

Hybrids are the new growth market

Potential sales growth of heavy industrial vehicles mainly lies outside the saturated market of forklifts where most are already pure electric vehicle. Several manufactures now offer lithium battery options, to get away from the tyranny of one battery set in use, one cooling down and one charging per vehicle. The rest are still powered by lead acid batteries.

At Volvo, the body becomes the battery

No more bulky batteries for electric cars: Volvo is participating in a research project aiming at integrating the battery into the body panels. This does not only mean squeezing the energy storage into narrow body cavities. The project aims higher.

In a materials development project launched by the London Imperial College, nine European companies and institutes are developing carbon fibres and polymer resin that can store and charge more energy faster than conventional batteries are able to do. Volvo is the only car manufacturer participating in the project funded in part by the European Union.

Govt floats green mission

The government is setting up a new body, with a corpus of up to Rs 200 crore, that will help companies develop environment-friendly technologies for hybrid and electric vehicles, joint secretary at ministry of heavy industries said.

The National Electric Mobility Mission will try to promote eco-friendly technologies as an alternative to use of non-renewable fuels such as petrol and diesel that dominate the Indian car and two-wheeler market. This will also help control air pollution in the country.

Electric vehicles offer lower running cost and maintenance, but have failed to catch the consumers fancy despite various tax benefits due to higher product prices and other factors influencing their cost of ownership. “There are several players in India making different kind of electric vehicles, but lack of infrastructure to charge these vehicles and the high-price of hybrid cars has prevented growth,” said Ambuj Sharma, joint-secretary, ministry of heavy industries.

The electric two-wheeler industry, with over three-dozen manufacturers, has an installed capacity of around 10 lakh units a year, but annual sales are restricted to around a lakh units only. Bangalore-based Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles has managed to sell only a few hundred electric cars in India so far. The cost of electric cars and hybrids are almost double that of petrol-fuelled vehicles due to expensive battery and intricate technology. Global car makers like Toyota and Honda had launched their hybrids in India, but could barely sell few hundred units due to the high price tag.

Lights seem brighter in Paris auto show

TWOSOME: A model sits at the wheel of the Nissan NuVu electric concept car during the Paris Auto Show 

The Paris Motor Show, the world's first auto salon, is shaping up to be perhaps the most notable show this year.

Organisers are promising more than 100 world premieres when the doors open at the Paris Expo site on September 30 for two days of press previews. The public show dates are October 2-17.

All told, the number of product introductions at the Mondial de l'Automobile could exceed those at the auto shows in Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York combined during last year.

The growth of the biennial Paris show — at the last event, in 2008, the wraps came off 80 new cars — suggests that the world's automakers are increasingly comfortable with the prospect of parading their debutantes down a runway in front of the fashionable French.

BMW unveils Mini Scooter E ahead of Paris show

BMW today unveiled the Mini Scooter E, an all-electric concept vehicle that was originally scheduled to make its debut at the 2010 Paris Auto Show next week.

The German automaker apparently decided to give a preview of the vehicle during London Fashion Week, employing model Agyness Deyn to make the introduction.

As predicted, the scooter is an all-electric plug-in vehicle with an onboard cable that can be plugged directly into a standard household outlet.

BMW also incorporated some quirky high-tech gadgets into the compact gadabout vehicle.

For starters, the scooter has an enclosed docking station for a smart phone. Instead of using a key, or an electric key fob, owners unlock their Mini Scooter E by securing their smartphone into the docking station on turning it on.
