Audi to Make Fuel Using Solar Power


he automaker is using technology from SolarFuel to make renewable methane for natural-gas vehicles.

Audi is building a plant that will use solar and wind power to make methane from water and carbon dioxide. The plant, which will use technology developed by Stuttgart, Germany-based SolarFuel, is scheduled to start operation later this year. It will produce enough methane to power 1,500 of Audi’s new natural-gas vehicles, which also go on sale this year.
SolarFuel’s process uses excess renewable energy generated as a result of Germany’s push to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. There’s now so much renewable energy in Germany that supply sometimes exceeds demand—such as when the wind is blowing late at night. That power could be cheap enough to make methane from water and carbon dioxide, even though the process for doing so is inefficient.
SolarFuel says its approach may be a solution to one of the biggest challenges with renewable energy—its variability. Methane, which can be stored in existing natural-gas storage facilities, provides a convenient, long-term option for storing the energy.
To make the methane, SolarFuel combines two existing technologies. One is electrolysis, which splits water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. The other is methanation, which combines hydrogen with carbon from carbon dioxide to make methane. The company says its innovation lies in the way it’s combined the two processes.

Green News : Diesel price hikes make solar power attractive option


NEW DELHI: Rising petroleum prices are expected to benefit renewable energy solution providers as commercial establishments that use diesel generator sets for their captive requirements may find solar powerattractive.
The city gas distribution (CGD) players too expect commercial establishments to switch from diesel to piped natural gas in the areas where power supply is unreliable.
Several commercial establishments are now switching to solar solutions for their captive power needs as cost of solar modules is falling and the installation cost can be recovered within five years, industry officials said.
According to Megawatt Solutions CEO Siddharth Malik, “Every square meter of concentrated solar thermal collector can replace up to 200 litres of diesel annually.” Megawatt Solutions, in partnership with the renewable energy ministry, has a 0.5 mw project in Gurgaon, which provides a hybrid solution by integrating solar-thermal with fossil fuel. “The discounted payback time of a hybrid system can be about 2-3 years and is getting shorter with further diesel price hike,” said Malik.

Pure electric cars are a disaster. On-road pure electric cars continue to sell at a level barely above one quarter of the sales of pure electric golf cars or a tenth of pure electric forklifts. Those golf cars are profitable but in a saturated market and, because that business is going nowhere, Ingersoll Rand is thinking of selling subsidiary Club Car, according to the Wall Street Journal. Club Car is the world’s largest golf car manufacturer. It appears that Ingersoll Rand has too many lackluster subsidiaries and too little synergy between them according to activist investors. However, that is a pleasant world compared to pure electric on-road cars with over 100 companies missing plan while heroically absorbing Olympian losses, some even selling the cars at less than the cost of the traction battery alone.

Mumbai, January 7, 2013 — Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., a part of the US $15.9 billion Mahindra Group, today named its next generation, future ready, electric car as the ‘Mahindra e2o’. The Mahindra e2o is the manifestation of Mahindra Group’s vision of the ‘Future of Mobility’, which was revealed earlier this year by Group Chairman Anand Mahindra. It involves the creation of future-ready vehicles that meet the 5 C’s framework of – Clean, Convenient, Connected, Clever and Cost Effective. The Mahindra e2o is the first step in the creation of an entire electric vehicle value chain and ecosystem by the Mahindra Group.
Pronounced as ‘Ee-too-oh’, the electric vehicle has undergone extensive testing, validation and has been certified as road worthy in India. The Mahindra e2o is slated to be launched soon and will be produced at Mahindra Reva’s recently inaugurated plant in Bengaluru. This is India’s first platinum certified automobile plant and has a rated capacity of 30,000 cars per annum.
Started under the project code name NXR, the Mahindra e2o is ‘Powered by Reva’, benefiting from Mahindra Reva’s extensive experience in electric cars.
The Mahindra e2o has been named keeping in mind the overall Mahindra Reva philosophy of “inspired by orange to go green” for sustainable living. The ‘e’ in Mahindra e2o stands for the energy of the Sun which is abundant and clean. The ‘2’ pronounced as ‘to’ signifies the connected technologies in the car, while ‘o’, represents ‘Oxygen’, the life force that sustains all of our existence on Planet Earth. Thus, the name in its totality is a testimony to the Mahindra Group’s commitment to a cleaner environment for our planet.

A diverse toolkit of electronic components can today be printed. These include batteries, antennas, memories, sensors, etc. An important building block linking all these components is the printed thin film transistor. This vital device enables logic and therefore data processing. Despite years of development however, printed transistors are not yet a commercial reality.
Far Asia is the primary centre for the development and production of thin film transistors, which are used in display, X-ray detectors, large-area photosensors, etc. Global companies like Samsung and LG are leading the way. This has promoted us to dedicate a session to “Printed Logic” in our Printed Electronics Asia event, www.PrintedElectronicsAsia.com,  which takes place October 2-3, 2012 in Tokyo.
In this short article, we will give a brief overall assessment of printed electronics, outlining critical challenges facing printed transistors from both a market and technical prospective. This article will help set the parameters for the debate that we hope to promote in our event.
Where is the value in printing transistors?
Today, we have a rapidly increasing range of material options available for fabricating TFTs, including oxides, organics, etc. In spite of this, amorphous and polycrystalline silicon remain the dominant technologies.
